Sheer Disgrace: Communalisation of "Vande Mataram"!.... "Vande Mataram" marking a culmination of yearlong celebrations today, to mark the centenary of its 1905 adoption as the national song. The song translates as "I bow to thee Mother" and was the national slogan during India's independence movement against British colonial rule. Although "Vande Mataram" was the frontrunner to become the national anthem when the country became independent in 1947, it was rejected, as Muslims felt offended over the depiction of the country as a Hindu goddess. Instead, "Jana Gana Mana" (The Minds of All People), penned by Nobel laureate Rabindranath Tagore, was chosen. Compulsion to sing Indian national song raises debates across the country and politicians take sides. Muslim leaders said that the politicians are once again trying to provoke the country's majority Hindus for political gain by stoking anti-Islamic sentiments. They say the Sanskrit language song, "Vande Mataram", penned by Bengali poet Bankim Chandra Chatterjee, has strong connotations of Hindu deity worship because it reveres India as a holy goddess, which is against Islam's basic tenets. Unfortunately the All India Muslim Personal Board (AIMPLB) raised a controversy over singing this song by the Muslim students on September 7, the concluding day of its centenary functions on the plea that it is un-Islamic. Muslim League linked this song with idolatry and called its singing by Muslims as an insult to Islam. The political parties debate that the song is not a religious song, only a patriotic one that sings the glories of the country as a motherland and not as a goddess. 'Vande Mataram' they say means, "We bow to you, motherland". ![]() It is not just a slogan; it is our pledge of National integration and unity. This is the same Vande Mataram song which had given a befitting reply to the ill-conceived effort of the Britishers to divide Bengal and had spear headed the bang Bhang Andolan a hundred years ago. It appears to be a part of the worldwide conspiracy of Islamic Jehad aimed at spreading terror everywhere. They are openly active in India without fear and inciting their people saying they will snatch away Mugalistan out of India. I appeal to all the youths of our country to sing Vande Mataram song today, which is its centenary celebration day. Whatever the Political parties & Muslim communities debate, we as Indians are going to sing the song as Patriotism is in our veins which cannot get adultrated by these trifle issues. We should understand that India is our Mother who has reared us and has nourished us and we owe a solemn duty towards her. Let one and all sing Vande Mataram only then the centenary celebration will be successful. Vande Mataram!
